Bohemian, Colourful Wedding in an Old Amphitheatre

With Christmas just around the corner and the weather so cold, let’s transport ourselves for a minute back to the heat of those summer days with this super pretty August wedding. Loved ones gathered in a beautiful old amphitheatre in the centre of Amsterdam for this flower filled, bohemian wedding. It was a relaxed affair filled with colour, fun, some seriously cute flower girls and one sexy bride. The stunning images are taken by the lovely Eliška of Khiria Photography. I am completely in love with this bouquet too…

I wore a long veil and a crown of fresh flowers in my hair. I borrowed earrings from my best friend and wore heels (I absolutely loved the pistachio colour of them!!).

Our aim was to have a relaxed, colourful, cozy and bohemian wedding, almost like a mini festival! The ceremony was held in an old outside amphitheater at Rijk van de Keizer in Amsterdam. It was so, intimate and very personal, we prepared some words for some of our loved ones.

For our favours we chose wooden spoons with our initials engraved, we tied our favourite recipe to them (homemade Buma BBQ sauce) and a red pepper!

My dress was from Cymbeline and was the first one I tried on! It was originally long at the front as well, but we cut it out. I wanted to feel comfy in the dress but also be able to dance like crazy in it! The dress was elegant, romantic and flattering, yet super sexy at the same time.

Instead of a cake we had a buffet table full of a variety of small deserts, all made by our friend Nicoline.

In the evening we had small open fires where our guests could sit and eat marshmallows. There were hundreds of small candles and little glass vases filled with just a couple of field flowers.

SHARON & TEUN
DATE: 24 August 2013

GUESTS: 210

THE PROPOSAL: It was Christmas day and we were on holiday in Udaipur, India. Teun got down on one knee in a beautiful Maharadja palace garden. Very romantic!!!
Our friends kindly made us a small rocking bench that was covered in flowers for the ceremony.

THE VENUE: Luckily the amphitheater was all part of our venue, which meant the day flowed beautifully from the marriage itself to drinks, diner and dancing. The venue was incredible, it had a rustic ambiance, great views and so much greenery considering it was in Amsterdam! It felt like we were abroad surrounded by all the beautiful flowers and scenery. Plus the staff were amazing!

PHOTOGRAPHY: We chose the incredible Eliška from Khiria Photography. We love her work and in Netherlands her style is very unique. Eliška traveled 1000 km from Prague to Amsterdam on the day!

BRIDESMAIDS: In Holland the parents tend to arrange the outfits for the flower-girls and page boys themselves. Most of their outfits were handmade or from Zara kids!

THE FLOWERS: We wanted field flowers, a little rustic and wild with lots of colour! The venues florist did an incredible job!

DECOR + DETAILS:  Our friends made the festival style wooden signs that were displayed throughout the grounds. Most of the decorations were organized by the venue but we brought some giant balloons and made some lanterns with long ribbons attached.

THE ENTERTAINMENT: We had a band during the reception drinks when we served homemade punch and lemonade followed by another band and DJ in the evening.

THE HONEYMOON: Morocco!

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: The ceremony itself and all the speeches and movies our friends & family put together for us – it was hilarious yet very moving!

OUR TOP TIPS: Don’t forget to enjoy the planning as well as the day itself and don’t be afraid to let people arrange things for you if they are willing to help!

Winter Bridal Bouquets

With a winter wedding you can create an utterly romantic, atmospheric affair. Roaring fires, winter whites and a good measure of sparkle all make for a truly magical day! Winter bouquets are one area you can really capture the essence of the season and I have hand-picked a selection of my favourite bouquets. Think icy whites, festive privet berries, eclectic overflowing bouquets that are full of texture, all mixed together with pops of unexpected colour…

One of my favourite things about a winter bouquet is the textures you can create; from the softness of winter roses and cotton flowers to the metallic shimmer of dusty miller and the matte pearl like quality of berries. Add to the mix all the wonderful textures of heather, seed pods and pine boughs and the result will be pretty spectacular. The very nature of winter flowering blooms means that your bouquet will look pretty and fresh all day long and well into the following week too!

You can easily add some festive magic to your bouquet around this time of year by adding a selection of rich red berries and pine boughs to your bouquet. I love the idea of adding some tartan fabric or ribbon around your bouquet too as shown below.

During Spring and Summertime you are pretty much spoilt for choice with an abundance of colourful, natural and seasonal blooms to choose from. Many brides worry that there is not as many options in the Winter months. However you’d be surprised, there is still a huge choice of incredible seasonal blooms and foliage. I have compiled a list of some of these gorgeous winter flowering blooms below…

Flowers: Anemones, tulips, astrantia, roses, tuberose, paperwhites, cotton, narcissus, amaryllis, scabiosa, waxflower, snowdrops, eryngium, pansies and lilies
Foliage: Fresh dill, rosemary, pistache, heather, holly, sola flowers, eucalyptus pods, banana stem, berzelia berries, conifer branches, silver brunia, scented-geranium leaves, dusty miller, juniper boughs, privet berries, pine boughs and pine-cones.

Well I’m spoilt for choice! Which is your favourite?

Autumn Leaves Wedding Inspiration

There is definitely a hint of Autumn in the air and as much as I will miss summer, I have to admit I can hardly wait for autumn (apart from the rain of course!). There is something about those crisp, chilly days and the golden hues that I crave. Long walks collecting berries and fruits, making apple pies and sipping on hot cider! The natural colour palette is incredible too, from russet and taupe to rich berry reds, plum and damson. Some of my favourite weddings are ones that really reflect the seasons and with autumn you can most definitely take an abundance of ideas from nature itself!

One thing’s for sure, fruit is the perfect starting point to base your decor and styling upon. I just love the idea of serving hot apple cider poured into the apples themselves to your guests on arrival. Rather than canapés, let guests toast their own marshmallows over fire pits and serve a selection of berry pies for dessert!

When it comes to flowers there is a long list of suitable blooms for the season including scabious, cornflowers, clematis, dahlias and sedum. Combine these with beautiful autumn foliage, hips, dried wheat, berries and seedheads to add texture and depth of colour. By mixing the florals with so much pretty foilage you can actually save a small fortune on the amount of flowers needed too!

Fallen leaves are another perfect element to incorporate into your styling. The leaves used as place names above add such a lovely rustic touch and are free too! They also work really well included in the buttonholes for the boys and help to tie the whole look together.

I am all ready now for those incredible autumn colours and walking amongst the fallen leaves in the park!

Welcome autumn…

Parma Violets

Violet and purple are personal favourites of mine – they have an utterly romantic edge without looking too girly. There’s something about the many different tone and colour levels you can incorporate with this colour scheme that always wins my heart. To create depth and richness to your palette, mix mauve, deep crimson or aubergine tones together. These work wonderfully for a autumnal or winter wedding. You can just as easily brighten and freshen the palette for a summer wedding too by incorporating cooler dusty blues, pinks and pastel tones with brighter purple pops of colour. Its such a versatile, romantic and soothing colour scheme!

No matter what the time of year, there are always an abundance of purple hued flowers in bloom. For a soft and romantic look, place pretty stems in a mass of old lilac and clear glass medicine bottles on your tables. I love the different tones in the purple fabric napkins which very cleverly double up as place names and the flower stems wrapped inside as favours!

I am currently obsessed with delicate flower heads on cakes – the one below right is one of my favourites and so easy and inexpensive to achieve over a simple butter iced sponge cake. Don’t forget a display of beautiful apothecary and old sweet jars filled with parma violets too!

Shades of White Inspiration

Classic, pure, dreamy and romantic, are all words that spring to mind when you think of the colour white. This barely there hue really comes into its own when paired with the softest shades of grey, linen and blush…

As you can see this neutral palette works perfectly whatever the season. Lift the colour scheme for summer by mixing light, airy and transparent fabrics with the whitest of flowers teamed with fresh green foliage. Alternatively, tone it all down a touch with soft greys and beige’s. Create depth and texture in your bouquet by introducing a sprinkling of berries and tie together with trailing silk ribbons. Create drama with candlelight twinkling amongst pretty glassware and florals.
